In my debut novel, Miles to Go Before Redemption, I wanted to explore the complexities of family, particularly in the face of unexpected hardship. The story follows the Johnsons, an African American family living the American dream in 1990s Maplewood. However, their seemingly perfect life takes a dramatic turn when the patriarch, James, is arrested for embezzlement.

As the story unfolds, you’ll witness the Johnson family grapple with financial ruin, societal judgment, and personal grief. Through their struggles, they discover an inner strength they never knew they possessed. Miles, the eldest son, emerges as a pillar of support, determined to hold his family together. His journey of self-discovery and the untiring love of his mother, Emily, become rays of hope in the face of immense adversity.

Miles to Go Before Redemption is a story that will stay with you long after you turn the final page. It is a story about facing adversity, the power of love, and the unbreakable bonds of family and a journey of hope, healing, and, ultimately, redemption.
